Hooping & Paddling

We had SO much fun hoop-paddleboarding at Mooney's Bay on Labour Day. It was a gorgeous hot day, the beach was crowded (despite the absence of lifeguards) and the wind was strong. Our group had some experienced hoopers as well as hoop newbies. We paddled up the bay against the breeze, and then floated with the wind and current towards the other end, while keeping our hoops going. It's a very enlightening experience, having one's feet anchored to the board when we are used to turning and moving to maintain the hoop. A sudden hoop drop meant a scramble trying to paddle back to where it lay floating (phew, they float!).  I'm sure it was all quite entertaining to those on shore. After our session with Harmony of Urban Ocean SUP, we kept hooping on the land, where we were joined by some other landlubbing hoopers. Hoops, flow wands, slackline…a great way to spend a lovely sun-soaked afternoon.

Hoop & Stand Up Paddleboard: Mon. Sep. 3, 3-4:15pm @ Mooneys

Last month I took a First Waves Stand Up Paddleboard workshop with Harmony at Mooney's Bay to learn the basics of SUP, which is a growing trend for fun & fitness. What a glorious way to enjoy the waterways of Ottawa!

Harmony (Urban Ocean Stand Up Paddle) offers all kinds of classes including First Waves, Floating Yoga, Onboard Fitness, Moonlight paddles, private groups, kids and family classes. She has a fleet of BOGA boards and delivers programs at most Ottawa waterfronts.

Harmony has put together a special HoopSUP class at Mooney's so that we can blend our hoop skills with SUP (I would suggest bringing hoops that you don't mind getting wet; untaped polypro would be ideal). How about staying to play, hoop & picnic at the beach post-workshop? What a great way to end off the summer season! (In-your-face, back to school!)

Here are the details from Harmony's booking site:

Learn the basics of SUP and then challenge yourself to bring your hoop skills on the water. Your entire body is engaged as you and your hoop move around your board.

Build strength, increase stability and balance with even the most basic hoop moves. Let the flow of your hoop dance connect with the flow of the water beneath your board for a fun new experience.

New to hooping? What a great way to experience it for the first time. We'll get you started on the sand and then you can head out for some play time. Come out and meet some of Ottawa's talentend Hoop Dancers and Instructors as they bring their hoops on the water.

The class is $25 + tax. Book here: (scroll down to see September 3rd classes, and follow the link to register).

The Hooping Life movie, this Fri. March 30 at Dovercourt

The countdown is on for the Ottawa Screening of the Hooping Life at Dovercourt this Fri. March 30, 6:30pm (movie at 7:15pm, hoop jam to follow)! In addition to the movie and jam, there will be door & raffle prizes of great hoop merchandise. Click for the poster (pdf).

Tickets ($15) can be purchased in advance from Jenny, Trish, Sophie, Brigitte, Bryana and Robyn as well as by phone (613-798-8950 ext. 0) or in person at Dovercourt; they will also be available at the door for $20.

This is the perfect opportunity to mingle with local hoopers, learn about the origins of the hooping phenomenon and give it a whirl at the jam. Come out to celebrate & support the Ottawa/ Gatineau Hoop community!
