Ninja Hoops Workshop Description

The way of the Ninja can difficult to follow. You must be powerful, yet graceful. Surprising, yet subtle. Explosive, yet balanced. Ninja Hoops has come to bring the spirit of the Ninja to your hoop practice. Beginning with fundamental martial arts theory, and working up through the body, this workshop will give a thorough overview of how to hoop like a Ninja master, moving your body and tool with intention, spatial awareness, and flow.

Our workshop will cover stances and footwork, kicks and strikes, fanciness and flair, and even extend to some portals and partner interaction. This workshop is intended for those with at least basic hooping proficiency, and a particular comfort with hand hooping, but will be challenging and informative for hoopers of any physical background or experience level. You DO NOT want to miss this, so make your calendars now and get your Ninja on!

No refunds available. But you may sell your ticket by contacting us and giving us a name to transfer the ticket to.

Ninja Hoops is a Bay Area (San Francisco, CA) based hooping duo. They perform and teach workshops to all ages. They incorporate elements of martial arts, classical acrobatics, and silly clowns into their hooping.

Note from Trish: I've had the pleasure of taking workshops from Marria and Zach over the years at Hoop Convergence and Return to Roots Hoop Gathering, and they are amazing. Their content is innovative and creative, they are wonderful teachers and their workshop delivery is as smooth and polished as their hoop flow. I'm so excited that they are able to visit Ottawa and I would strongly encourage hoopers in Ottawa and the surrounding areas to experience their Ninja energy.

First hoop jam of "Spring", Fri. Mar. 21, 7-8:30pm

Is that Spring in the air, or just more flurries, wind and cold?  ;-)

We'll keep our spirits up and hope for a warming trend sometime soon. All are welcome; there will be tunes to spin to and hoops to borrow.

Hoop jam this Fri. Mar. 7, 2014, 7-8:30pm

This long cold winter has me negligent in my website updating duties. Hoop Jams have been carrying on every 2 weeks, but I have only been posting over on the Ottawa Gatineau hoopers Facebook page.

Our next jam is this Friday, 7-8:30pm. The jams have been very busy, which is gratifying as the host(ess). Many newcomers have been coming out to check out what hooping is all about, and the experienced hoopers in the room provide inspiration as they show what you can do with a plastic ring.

World Hoop Day 2013 compilation video

Check out the video of WHD videos (Oct. 5, 2013), edited by WHD choreographer Kristen "Tink" McQuillan. From single performers to large groups with some pretty scenic backdrops (including our own, on the grounds of the Museum of Civilization/ History with the Parliament buildings and the Ottawa River in the background), it's a fun celebration of hooping around the globe. You'll see a quick shot of the Ottawa/ Gatineau hoopers doing the 'drunken hooping' section of the dance partway through.

Some stats from the article on "255 hoop dancers from 11 countries spun up 28 World Hoop Day performances, all brought together with choreography by Kristin “Tink” McQuillin of Spin Matsuri, and then merged by her into another exciting video of hoop dance unity from around the globe!"

First hoop jam of 2014: Fri. Jan. 10, 7-8:30pm

Join us for the first hoop jam of 2014, at Dovercourt in the Assembly Hall (upstairs). These bi-weekly jams are free -- thank you to Dovercourt Recreation Centre for their support of the hoop community, providing this regular practice space). Hoops are available to use or you may purchase your own; contact Trish at

All are welcome including children, but for their safety, they must be closely supervised. Jams are a great opportunity to meet other Ottawa/ Gatineau hoopers, and see some inspiring flow with hoops, poi, staff, flow wands, flags and more.
