Back from Hoop Heaven!

Hoopers gathered on the lawn on the opening afternoon of Hoop Convergence 2010.It's hard to face the real world when you've been away in Hoop nirvana for 6 days. This year's Convergence was bigger and better than ever. Forums on a wide variety of topics allowed hoopers to talk, discuss, and discover that they share so much in common with their fellow hoopers, despite geographical differences. Topics included hooping with kids, for therapy, as a business model, for social outreach, performance, dance, costuming and more. The workshops were amazing, with a trend towards off-body hooping and the use of small, light hoops made from Polypropylene, often left untaped for an austere look. Related arts were also explored, including workshops on yoga poi fusion, acro yoga, and flow yoga.

Beka (Rebecca Halls) whirls in a beautiful performance in Saturday's showcaseA highlight was the Performance Showcase on Saturday night. Chock full of great flow and movement, it featured performances beyond hooping, with poetry, comic monologues, block heading by Safire (inserting long needles into the nose -- yikes!) and an unforgettable piece by Kayti Bunny.

The food was great, the people so fun, the times were good and only sleep was in short order. The weather cooperated and when it didn't the tents and pavilion kept us dry.

On our way to Hoop heaven!

The May long weekend is approaching and we're getting ready to leave for Hoop Convergence near Raleigh, North Carolina. The Ottawa/ Gatineau area will be well represented by Trish, Brigitte, Sophie & Alexandra. Hoopers from all over the US and Canada will be attending.

Clothes, snacks, cameras and of course hoops are being readied for the trip. Workshops, jams, performances and forums begin on Friday and run through Monday, with closing circle and goodbyes on Tuesday before we return home, to reality. Last year was an amazing experience and this year promises to be bigger and better.
